Based on statistics published by the Czech Statistical Office (CZSO), a record-breaking number of foreign tourists – more than 20 million – stayed in Czech hotels, guesthouses, and campsites in 2017. This figure represents an increase of 1.7 million people (9.1%) from 2016.

Foreign visitors to the country increased by 9.2% while the number of domestic visitors increased by 9%. There were 10.2 million foreign tourists and 9.9 million local tourists. More tourists came from Germany than from any other country.

  1. Germany 1,954,833
  2. Slovakia                  688,490
  3. Poland          578,465
  4. Russia          551,191
  5. USA                   539,023
  6. China 491,648
  7. UK          470,576
  8. South Korea 417,438
  9. Italy          392,861
  10. Austria 292,420

The majority of guests (1.6 million people) stayed in 4-star hotels, a rise of 8.3% from 2016. 1.3 million tourists booked into 3-star hotels, and this was an increase of 7.4%. Around 400,000 people stayed in guesthouses. In 2017, there were 850,000 more foreign visitors than in 2016, but the statistics do not include Airbnb and private accommodation, so the actual number of tourists could even be double the published figure.

Germany maintains its position as the country from which most tourists arrive, and this has not changed for many years. However, the 35.3% increase in tourists from Russia is significant, and a recent trend is increasing visitor numbers from Asian countries, especially China.

Among the regions, South Moravia fared best, where visitor numbers increased by 14.6 %, and in Pilsen, Region Usti, Karlovy Vary, and Moravian-Silesia the increase was around 10% compared to 2016.
