After 33 years, the ERA-EDTA (European Renal Association – European Dialysis and Transplant Association) Congress is returning to Budapest in 2019. The event was held in the Hungarian capital in 1986 and since then Budapest has changed significantly.

Every year, one of the most prestigious associations of nephrology worldwide rotates its European congress and seven years ago, HUNGEXPO together with the support of the Hungarian Society of Nephrology submitted its bid to host the 2019 congress. Back in 1986, the congress with 3,000 attendees was already quite an important event for the Hungarian capital. Since then, the number of delegates has tripled. During the four day congress, 9,000-10,000 international guests are expected in Budapest from 13th to 16th June 2019.

”The congress will not only offer an exceptional scientific programme, but Budapest will also be seen at the city’s best time of the year. The rich history of the city combined with a vivid cultural milieu is waiting for the visitors of ERA-EDTA. The must-see attractions, modern gastronomy, the River Danube that divides the city with old and modern buildings side by side, provides a great environment for the 56th ERA-EDTA Congress” said Professor George Reusz, the Congress President.

At the host venue, HUNGEXPO a plenary hall for 2,500pax and 7 additional section rooms with a capacity of 500-1,000pax will also be set up, bringing the total space requirement to 40,000 square metres.

“We are thrilled that Budapest is on the map of Europe’s mega size association congresses again. After Vienna, Madrid and Copenhagen, ERA-EDTA will come to us next year, thanks to several years of preliminary work” said Gábor Ganczer, CEO of HUNGEXPO Budapest. We have hosted and organised many large congresses with thousands of attendees in recent years, but ERA-EDTA will be very special. The last time a similar scale event was held in Budapest was for the European Diabetes Congress (EASD) in 2002. Almost 10,000 visitors are going to be staying in all of the major hotels in Budapest and will produce an impressive turnover of around 30,000 room nights “, added the CEO.

Last week, in preparation for the event, nearly 70 representatives of the congress sponsor companies arrived for a two-day visit to Budapest for the booth selection meeting. After a short familiarisation tour of the city, they looked at the 8,000-square-metre future exhibition area and met with the HUNGEXPO project team as well.
