AREA AND LOCATION

Croatia, the newest member of the EU (since 2013), extends over an area of 56 540 square km and is located between South-Central Europe and Middle Europe next to the northeast Adriatic coast. The subdivisions of Croatia on the first level are the 20 counties and one city-county. On the second level these are municipalities and towns. Offshore Croatia consists of over one thousand islands varying in size. The largest islands in Croatia are Cres and Krk which are located in the Adriatic Sea. The Danube, Europe’s second longest river, runs through the city of Vukovar.

BORDERING COUNTRIES

Croatia borders Slovenia and Hungary to the north, Serbia to the northeast, Bosnia and Herzegovina to the east, Montenegro to the southeast. Its southern and western flanks border the Adriatic.

 

CITIES

Zagreb is the capital city, with a population of 786,200 inhabitants. The other big cities are Split (188,694 inhabitants), Rijeka (143,800 inhabitants), Osijek (114,616 inhabitants), Zadar (72,718 inhabitants), Slavonski Brod (63,268 inhabitants), Pula (58,594 inhabitants).

 

CLIMATE

Croatia has mixture of climates. In the north and east the climate is continental, predominant with hot summers and cold winters. Along the Adriatic coast, it is Mediterranean, meaning warm dry summers and mild winters, with 2,600 hours of sunlight on average yearly – it is one of the sunniest coastlines in Europe! A semi-highland and highland climate is in the south-central region. The coldest month of the year is January (5° C average), while the warmest month is July (26° C average).
