AREA and LOCATION

The Republic of Serbia (Република Србија, Republika Srbija) spreads over an area of 88,361 square km and is located on the intersection of Central and Southeastern Europe spreading over the Carpathian basin and central part of the Balkans. Serbia is divided into 29 districts and 1 city. Serbia was formerly part of the Yugoslav state, which was created after WW I and continued until 2006 in various forms, when Serbia became independent.

Београд, Beograd (Belgrade) is the capital city with a population of 1,659,440 inhabitants (2011). The other large cities include Novi Sad (389,245 inhabitants, 2013) which is the capital of the Serbian province of Vojvodina, and the administrative centre of the South Bačka District; Niš (260,237 inhabitants, 2011), Kragujevac (150,835 inhabitants, 2011), Subotica (97,910 inhabitants, 2011) and Zrenjanin (79,773 inhabitants, 2002).

 

CLIMATE

In the north of the country, the climate is continental with cold winters and hot summers. Central Serbia has a continental and Mediterranean climate, while south – especially along the coast – has Adriatic climate with hot and dry summers and fairly cold winters in the inland. The capital, Belgrade, has a moderate continental climate with an average

annual air temperatues at around 11.70 C (winter – up to minus 5 C, summer – 16 to 27 C, often up to 35 C)

LANGUAGE

The official language is Serbian, which is a part of the South Slavic group of languages, such as Russian, Polish, Slovak and Ukrainian.
It is the only European language that uses both Cyrillic and Latin alphabets. 5% of the population speaks Albanian.

SMOKING

Smoking is prohibited in some enclosed public spaces such as hospitals since 2005 but the ban does not cover restaurants, bars, internet cafes, etc. The sale of tobacco to persons under the age of 18 is prohibited.

 

TAXIS

Taxis in Belgrade are cheaper than in other European countries. Most taxi companies charge their rides by two tariffs: day and night. The Night tariff is more expensive and lasts from 22.00 hours to 08.00 in the morning. Cab drivers of TaxiEliteClub, which specializes in business travel, airport service, individual and group transportations, speak fluent English.
